When I pronounce or hear the word
woman, inside of me starts to develop an image of finesse and tenderness,
qualities with which these angelic
beings are endowed, or the image of a sweet smile that can ward off the worst
winter, or it can make me feel again the emotion of love. But this attempt to
define the feeling connected with this word (woman) will have as result a long string
of descriptions which can make myself to be lost among the thousands of words …
If the men should choose a day to
"celebrate the woman”, they must choose each day no matter how many days they
will live close to these gentle beings, still few days would be to show them
how much they mean to men.
But was it or is it like I said?
Maybe I’m a dreamer and I’m meditating to much about what women represent for
me, but not about what they represent for others…
Always I was wondering from where
comes this idea of this day in which we must celebrate the woman. Why one day?
Why not more than one?
Trying to find an answer I found up
that this celebration has roots in the Ancient Greece, when the Greeks celebrated
their mother-god, Rhea, the one who gave birth to all gods and to all beings, being in the same time
associated with Earth. In the same day the Greeks celebrated the women, the
only ones who had the gift to give birth.
When the Ancient Greece collapsed,
this celebration was forgotten and the women didn’t had this celebration
dedicated to them. Perhaps because of the long and so tumultuous periods,
characterized by the wars that took place, a supportive role in the society was
attributed to woman and to ensure the continuity of traditions and
customs.
Considering the fact that all beings
are born equal, I can say that on the evolutionary stage of the civilizations,
the woman began to be into obscurity as time passed by, her role in the society
was restricted more and more. Therefore her role was to be to give birth, to
take care and educate the children and household work.
As the time was passing by, the
women began to have a secondary role in the society, were marginalized, and
their rights began to be increasingly restricted, in some cases as much as
possible.
But since the first decade of the
20th century, when many manifestations in protest of women started take place
in different parts of the world, the perception of the women in the society
began to change and with it the recognition of certain rights which they
deserved.
All these manifestations have
materialized in 1977 during a congress of the Organisation, when the
participants recognised the equal rights with those of men, such as the right
to vote, the right to not be discriminated at the workplace, and also many
others. Also, during this congress it was designated a day to celebrate this event:
8th March – the International Women’s Day.
Unfortunately there are still
somewhere on this planet a lot of women who don’t have the same freedom that
the women from the develop countries have. Still we can find out that some
women have the same status that they had 1000 years ago. It’s a shame…. maybe
is a word so small, but I am currently in an inability to describe better my
disappointment…
I want to remind that since ancient
times, in Romania, but also in other neighbouring countries such as Bulgaria and Moldova, women are celebrated since
with the 1st of March, when each man must offer the traditional
"martisor”.
In some countries this day is
dedicated in the same while to all mothers, which can be the best definition of a complete woman.
Also, taking into consideration the
high proportion of ancient statues discovered on the Romanian territory,
depicting women (more than 65% of human-looking statues), makes me believe that
my ancestors, the Dacians, have awarded to women a central place in society.
I hope that women from all world to
enjoy at least the same attention from men, as it happens in this day dedicated
to them.
I am convinced that God created
woman to be loved and adored by man, and to be the missing half from men’s
thoughts and feelings. So let’s celebrate the woman as it should…
