Father's Day

Father's Day is an important event during the year. This event is a respectability to all fathers and it’s celebrated in many countries. The history of this event dates back over 100 years.

For the first time Father’s Day was celebrated by the residents of Spokane, USA on 19th June, 1910. The initiative for the establishment of the feast was the resident of this city, Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. In this way she tried to pay homage to her father, who was an extraordinary man, because he brought up six children by himself after the death of his wife.

But still Father's Day in many countries isn’t an independent holiday. In most cases it’s celebrated "by the way" another important event. One of the positive exception is Poland. In Poland, the holiday of all dads is celebrated on 23rd June every year, as in Nicaragua. This day is celebrated in Poland since 1965. The purpose is a special honoring of fathers, emphasize their role and express thanks to them for all their work in their child's education. According to psychologists, dad introduces the rules, sets boundaries, teaches duties and carrying responsibility. For child it’s the model to identify and follow, for both - son and daughter.

In many European countries, Father's Day is celebrated on 19th March. In that day, Saint John is reminisced and Father's Day is celebrated by the citizens of Belgium, Spain, Liechtenstein, Portugal and Italy. In Denmark, Father's Day takes place in the shadow of Constitution Day. However, in Romania, Father's Day is a novelty. Officially, for the first time it was celebrated in 2010. Previously, it was the only European country where there was no  Father's Day. It has changed due to the high activity of the TATA association, which wants more rights for fathers. Nowadays, in Romania people celebrate Father's Day on second Sunday of May every year.

In Germany, Father's Day falls on Ascension Day and it’s a day off from work. Depends on region it’s called Mannertag (Men’ Day) or Herrentag (Gentlemen’ Day). The specific tradition of this day are common group climbing consist of men. The peak, which is chosen to reach, cannot be too steep because climbing group pulls together so-called Bollerwagen. There is a trolley on wheels filled with wine, beer and traditional sausages.

To sum up, the role of the father as the head of the family is very important. Therefore, in each country should be a day to celebrate this event. And it's not only about maintaining  good relationship with parents, who brought us up even we don’t live in the same house, but rather to appreciate their effort which they put into our education like George Herbert said: "One father means more than a hundred of teachers."
