Grandmother’s and
Grandfather’s Days are celebrated in honor of all the grandmothers and grandfathers. Due to the fact that in
Romania we don’t celebrate Grandparents’
Day, I decided to focus on the
way of celebrating those days in different countries.
In Bulgaria, Grandmother's Day (Babin den) was celebrated on 8th January (according to the Julian calendar), according to the Gregorian calendar it was
on 21st January. In Bulgaria, the Julian calendar was approved, but Grandma's Day is
celebrated on 21st January and it
looks a bit different. Mother
with child born in
the last year goes on that day
and visits relatives saying
wishes of good health.
In North America, National Grandparents Day falls
on the first Sunday after Labor
Day. It was proclaimed in 1978 by
president Jimmy Carter. The symbol of that day is the flower called
forget-me -not, that day has also its own anthem known as "Song for
Grandma and Grandpa". Schools
organize some festivities. That day
has to realize children how much they
owe their grandparents. In
that day grandchildren are encouraged to
help the oldest members
of the family.
In France, Grandparents Day hasn’t got so long tradition, recently it’s celebrated
on the first Sunday of March.
In Japan, Grandparents Day doesn’t function at all. However, there is another holiday – so-called Day of Respect
for the Age (Keiro
no Hi) – it’s celebrated
on 15th September.
In Italy, Grandparents Day
is celebrated on 2nd October which is the church feast of the guardian angels,
and in Brazil Grandparents Day is on 26th April.
In Poland, Grandmother's Day is celebrated on 21st January and Grandfather's Day on 22nd January. Both celebrations are equally
important for the seniors, their
children and grandchildren.
At school children prepare performances
for their grandparents. They give
them self-made greeting cards, they
carry flowers or chocolates.
Grandma and Grandpa are important persons in life of the
whole family. They bequeath behavior patterns to younger generations and care about their
education. We should all appreciate the time spending with our
grandmother and grandfather
like those moments are at a premium.
