Majówka

Poles call the first three days of May as Majówka, when they celebrate Labour’s Day (1st May), Flag Day (2nd May) and Constitution Day (3rd May). These days represent national days in Poland, on the 1st and 3rd May people don’t go to work. If it happens that these three days to be connected with the weekends, some people will take off from work for the 2nd of May, creating in this way a mini-holiday of 5 days.

In Nowosolna, Majówka has an extra meaning, being the name of a celebration of the community. This event takes place in every year in the last Sunday of May.

In this year took place the fourteen edition of this event, the first celebration being in 2000. So, this celebration event became a tradition for the community from here.

This event is organised by the Gminno Parkowe Centrum Kultury i Ekologii with the support of the local administration, and also thanks to some sponsors. The preparations for this event started with long time before it, but the most intensive it was in the last week. I am happy that I could help in it, even my contribution wasn’t so big.

In the main room of the centre were organised places for different activities which wanted to promote something. In this way we organised a place to promote the volunteer ship, the project and also the Romanian culture.

During this time I’ve talked with people, being helped to overcome any language walls by my mentor of this project.  That’s why I want to thank him and anyone from here for their help.

Also, I serve everyone with a cookie made by myself with some help to be honest remembering about the period from Romania. The name of the cookies is cocoa snowballs (bulgărași de cacao), which is very familiar for Romanians. The taste of Romanian cookies it was only an introduction in Romanian culture.

As I said I wasn’t the only one in this room, there were present persons  who carry out activities in the centre, promoting their activities by exposing their art object created by different techniques, such as painting, decoupage and modelling the clay. Some scouts and rangers were present, playing interactive games with children. Also, here was present a company which promote future of the energy by solar panels (green energy)

The day started with a cycling competition in which took part in a large number of participants. Besides this, were performed other competitions, such as the running race or pentaque (a sport is practiced throwing metal balls, the winner being the one who throws the ball as close to a small wooden ball).

I was impressed by the traditional costumes of singers groups which were present at this event. The audience seemed to like very much their traditional songs, and also the fact that they live the songs made the songs to be magical.

On the stage was also Fuego, the group from GPCKiE, most of the members also dance with me. Unfortunately, there were some problems with the sound and they couldn’t demonstrate their true vocal qualities.

And how it was possible a celebration without food. We all eat the delicious bigos (cabbage with wild pig meat) which seemed to be cooked very carefully. With this occasion I ate for the first time wild pig meat.

The party ended close to midnight, those present wanted it to continue, but unfortunately all parties have an end.

At the end of this day everybody was tired, but we had the satisfaction that everything was great, the smile of they who were present at this event being the best proof for it and the best reward for us. It was another day in which I was a happy volunteer.
